Well… Today I am officially 27 days out from my departure to Houston, TX for staging. And today (technically yesterday) was the first day I opened the two crates I had been compiling stuff in that I might potentially want to bring with me to Guate. Obviously when you see the picture I am about to upload under this post, you will see that I am very clearly an overpacking fool… I won’t even deny it. I felt that this shouldn’t be this hard for me because I am always taking trips either with my students or by myself so by now I should be a packing pro right? Wrong. No one is a professional and if they tell you they are, they are in the same denial I am in right now. Anyways. Packing. Yes. So in the picture, there are pretty much doubles of everything. For me it was easier to literally lay everything out on the floor in my parent’s garage and just pick through each thing and say “will I really even need/use this?” or “can I leave this behind if I need to?” So that was my goal. Sort through everything and make a crate for “stuff I NEED to bring” and “stuff I WANT to bring but don’t necessarily need…” That seemed to make things easier for me. And by the end of it, I only ended up with less than half of the items you see in the following picture. BUT don’t think that if by the end of the month and I’m for real packing and I have extra space that I won’t throw my dounut wall stickers in there, because I will in a heartbeat! I’m going to miss donuts like something serious… Ugh.
Anyways. Back to packing. I am going to try and post a picture from each packing stage I pass through. So right now I am at Phase 1. If you’re wandering why I have a big head on a stick, it’s ok. I’d wander too lol. That’s my bff Marie, from my earlier blog post. She’s over serving in Armenia as a TEFL English Teacher and LOVING it. (Shout out to you bff! Love you! And yes I’m totally bringing your head to Guatemala with me!) So before she left, she gave me her head on a stick to take with me on all my travels. I haven’t done a good job of remembering, but this time I won’t forget! 🙂
Ok, so the very most important items on this list for me to bring with me to Guate are (in no specific order): at least one bag of Costa Rican coffee (I’m an addict, sorry.), at least one of my 2 packs of toothpaste I love, same for the bars of soap, obviously toothbrushes, my microfiber towel (dries super quick), surge protector, all technology and chargers (phone, laptop, headphones, etc..), gopro, at least 2 pedialyte packs, sewing kit, shower flip flops, flonase (because allergies are the devil), wet wipes for all occaisions, waterproof backpack cover, lactaid pills (because milk is also the devil), wall tack (for holding stuff on walls), also duct tape (not pictured), and caramel apple pops (for a favorite treat from back home) and my brita water filters and bottle. Everything else that there are doubles of, I am going to try and take at least 1. So yes. Fun stuff. I have been avoiding this “packing for 2 years thing” like the actual plague. So here goes nothing! Phase 1: divide the necessary things from the desirable things. Obviously next phase would be to show you all a picture of all the materialistic things that made the “necessary things” cut. Then clothes would be phase 3. Because clothing is easy peezy. Hope y’all enojyed phase 1! Stay tuned for phase 2!
Also, so you know, the above picture is everything. Before attempting to divide it. And the next picture is after dividing the necessary things. The only things pictured are the necessary items (for me). Because each person’s necessities are going to vary 🙂
